Forgot to make note of this last week but I made some changes to the About page. It’s been tidied up, explains a few things about the site and also includes some reviewer chibis inspired by the adorable bio pics used on Brigid and co’s Good Comics for Kids blog. How’s that for insentive? Be a reliable guest reviewer for Kuriousity, get a chibi! Speaking of which, I’m still accepting guest reviews from fellow Canadian manga fans so pop me an e-mail if you’d like to contribute! Also, I’m willing to offer the chibis on a commission basis if anyone’s interested :)

Happy Birthday to me! As a present from me to you (and me), it’s a new site layout. Much prettier, and hopefully the text is easier on people’s eyes now. You may find a few spots are still a bit glitchy, or have some lopsided formatting, but rest assured I’m compulsively going through and fixing the problems as I find them.
I should have a me-oriented editorial of sorts later today but in the meantime, I hope you like the new layout and this bonus post picture of my first birthday present of the year. Full of glorious nostalgia, he looks positively perfect underneath my Bruce Tim Batman, wouldn’t you say?
Just a quick update today to apologize for the lapse in reviews the last few days and thus the stall in my android week. The remaining two reviews (June 15th edit: Only one review it seems, sorry!) will be posted over the weekend, and next week will focus on some more reviews for recent books. A bunch of double shifts at work (I shall not miss you, shift work), art commissions and some comic collaboration work has kept me super busy the last few days but it should wrap itself up shortly! All patience appreciated.
In the meantime, I recommend checking out my last post about global manga, in particular the comments. A lot of great points were made as a bunch of people graciously shared their thoughts; very interesting read!
And also on the note of global mangas, a few new appearances on Amazon.com in recent days: Hollow Fields (Vol. 03), Invisible, Wolverine: Prodigal Son (Vol. 01) and X-Men: Misfits (Vol. 01) (see above image).
And finally on a more disappointing note, Rivkah says that she was told by her Tokyopop editor that Steady Beat, volume 3, will not be seeing print. It’s a series I’ve really enjoyed and was looking forward to the third and final volume. Rivkah is currently seeing if she can get the print rights back from Tokyopop and atleast things are looking surprising good in that regard so far!
Just a few links today before I upload the next review in ghost story week. And speaking of reviews, next week I’ll be taking a break from the themes and older series, to put up some reviews for a few new releases! I’m glad people have been enjoying the theme idea, I really appreciate the kind words of those who’ve taken the time to comment and e-mail me about them! A new theme will begin after the week of new release reviews.
First of all, those who make frequent visits to the manga blogosphere have probably come across the debates and mild-outrage towards Tokyopop’s Manga Pilot contract. MangaBlog‘s Brigid shares her take on the casually constructed contract over at DigitalStrips.com, and makes some good points. A good place to start for a thoughtful and calm look at what’s sparking people into verbal action.
Second, for those who enjoyed Jonathan Clement’s work for (and in) NewType USA or some of his books, including The Anime Encyclopedia, you’ll be happy to know he has a new book coming out called ‘Schoolgirl Milky Crisis: Adventures in the Anime and Manga Trade’. Note: Schoolgirl Milky Crisis is a referrence to a non-existant anime series he used, in place of series he actually worked on, while writing about his experiences in his NewType USA column. No synopsis yet on the book itself but I think the title speaks for itself fairly well and it has the potential to be a pretty interesting read.
And elsewhere, there was some talk about the DramaQueen website being down for a number of days. Hopes were high that its return might symbalize some update content or information, but with its return this morning, that unfortunately does not seem the case. Hopefully Taisa will come through for the patient and shed some more light on DQ’s position at the end of the month.
Just in time for Free Comic Book Day on May 3rd, my Oh!Canada section has been updated with a list of comic shops across Canada. Organized by province, I looked into all that are listed for confirmation they were still running and sold anime/manga relevant merchandise (a daunting task but one that’s left me with lots of shiny new sites bookmarked). Of course if I’m missing any, please inform me and I’ll update it ASAP!
Also, several anime series were recently cut from YTV‘s schedule so TV viewers can check out my Anime in Canada page for the current schedule and offerings.
Back to FCBD, always lots of good stuff, from the chance to try out a bunch of new series as well as the sales on regular merchandise most stores put on. Manga-wise this year, keep an eye peeled for the usual free samplers: new to this year includes a Shonen Jump sampler and a Maximum Ride preview from Yen Press.
As for me, I plan to continue my 5-year, 8am tradition of being first in line with my buddies at Strange Adventures in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Nothing like good company, good food, sweet deals and an entire church auditorium full of free goodies. Hoping to see some new and familiar faces again this year!
So it’s a tad more than a tweak layout-wise, but the old one was having too many random glitches. I’ll do some little edits here and there on this layout but I’m hoping it’ll function much smoother for people!
I’ve also added some new titles to the Anime in Canada listing, some brief information on YTV’s Anime on Demand channel and a link in the Shopping Guide to a great Canadian source for some cheap manga and anime merchandise, BigPfieffer. Give a look for lots of Tokyopop back issues for $4 and really nicely priced figurines and model kits.
See that cute little Canadian maple leaf that now graces my blog header? Click on it and you’ll be led to the beginnings of my section tentatively (and enjoyably cheesily) called ‘Oh Canada!’: the Kuriousity resource for Canadian anime and manga fans. It’s a baby now but give ‘er time! Edit: Seems that FireFox dislikes my maple leaf link. Darn? Browser compatibility stinks. Will hopefully be fixed soon.
Quick news clippets of the day:
AnimeNewsNetwork has begun their information posts on Anime Boston including a few new licenses and updates on previously announced releases (CLAMP School included, finally!). |
I love big convention weekends; it keeps the internet community buzzing (unlike most update-dry weekends!)!A couple days old but interesting non-the-less to fans; KOSEN has stated on their personal blog that they’ve completed work on volume one of their current series with Tokyopop called Daemonium. They’re not allowed to release the details yet but it’s definately something to look forward to! KOSEN has gained worldwide recognition for their yaoi works, currently released in English by Yaoi Press, including Stallion and Saihoshi. On a stranger note, Japanator‘s John Martone = gay porn star? Who knew. Gia reveals all!
More clean-up around the site today. All manga reviews are up and now complete with some handy Amazon.ca links for fellow Canadians out there looking to add to their collections!
Over at ComicsVillage, the weekly reviews have been posted including one for Kitty Media’s Crimson Spell by yours truely.
On the news front, June recently announced five new yaoi titles. There’s a lot of my favourtie artists and writers in the bunch (Hinako Takanaga = more please) so I hope others are looking forward to them as much as I am! Check out the following link for all the details and some pretty pictures to accompany them. Source: AnimeNewsNetwork
Some big layout modification today! I’m hoping these changes will make my site more visitor friendly and easier for me to update from multiple locations. Some parts still need some format-tweaking so please bear with me as I sneak through and edit some things in the coming while. Thumbs up for shiny new features and learning new things!
Happy New Year! As a little celebration of it, I’ve finally gotten my blog fully site-integrated and is now on my index page! Which makes a heckuva lot more sense. Site updates and random news tidbits will now be intermingled for your convenience.
