Viz Media Revisits Culinary Battle with License of Food Wars Manga

Viz Media Revisits Culinary Battle with License of Food Wars Manga

It’s been a while since Amazon has revealed an early Viz Media license. Publishers have really been closing the gap between the timing of their announcements and when the new titles appears on retail sites, which is great for those who us want to order sooner than later. It does always leave little room for error though.

Viz Media missed this one by just a few days as eagle-eyed Amazon spelunkers found this listing (CAN/US) before it was confirmed by Shonen Jump’s podcast crew shortly after:

Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma – Yuto Tsukudo & Shun Saeki

We’ve been told Food Wars is “too racy” to place into the Shonen Jump magazine, so while it will be released under that title banner, it won’t be released simultaneously. Some ‘foodgasms’ gone too far perhaps? The series is about a young man named Sōma who is raised by his chef father and regularly engages with him in cooking battles. When Sōma is enrolled in a renowned culinary institute, he must put his skills up against a school of students where the graduation rate is next to nil.

I haven’t heard of this series before, but I really like the look of the art style. One of my current favourite series is also Toriko, so maybe that’s a good sign! In either case, the first print volume of Food Wars is scheduled for August 2014 with a digital edition intended for release a few months prior.

Review: Sunny (Vol. 01)

Sunny (Vol. 01)

Manga-ka: Taiyo Matsumoto
Publisher: Viz Media
Rating: Mature (16+)
Release Date: May 2013

Synopsis: “Synopsis: “What is Sunny? Sunny is a car. Sunny is a car you take on a drive with your mind. It takes you to the place of your dreams. Sunny is the story of beating the odds, in the ways that count. It’s the brand-new masterwork from Eisner Award-winner Taiyo Matsumoto, one of Japan’s most innovative and acclaimed manga artists.”

Anyone upset by the news of Hayao Miyazaki’s supposed retirement might find some consolation by picking up Sunny by Taiyo Matsumoto. Like Miyazaki, Matsumoto often draws on childhood and the surreal as inspiration for his work. The main difference would be that while Miyazaki usually centers his stories on strong female heroines, Matsumoto homes in on boyhood and young male characters. This is especially true with Sunny, a manga loosely based on Matsumoto’s own childhood experience of living in a group home.

NYCC 2013: Viz Media Announces Shoujo, Seinen and Shorts

NYCC 2013: Viz Media Announces Shoujo, Seinen and Shorts

The NYCC manga licenses – they just keep going, and going, and going… I love it! I can’t recall the last convention that had so many manga licenses in one place. Today I take a look at new licenses from Viz Media:

Battle Royale: Angels’ Border – Koushun Takami, Mioko Ohnishi & Youhei Oguma
Black Rose Alice – Setona Mizushiro
My Love Story!! – Kazune Kawahara & Aruko
Terra Formars – Yū Sasuga & Kenichi Tachibana
Time Killers: Kazue Kato Short Story Collection – Kazue Kato

Nearly every title on this list stands out to me in one good way or another. Starting from the top, there’s Battle Royale: Angels’ Border. This is a manga side-story sequel to Battle Royale, written by the author of the original books. I haven’t read those (yet) but I did read the manga adaptation Tokyopop released and have watched the movie several times, so I’m looking forward to a need to refresh and revisit. The story is split into two parts – episode 01 and episode 02 – with each drawn by a different artist. They’re both released together in this collected edition.

Black Rose Alice is a title I’ve heard praised a lot in passing but never much more than that, but I can’t deny the draw of a title by Setona Mizushiro no matter what I have or haven’t heard. I love her work, which in English includes GoComi’s Afterschool Nightmare and Tokyopop’s X-Day. She renders such heart-wrenching characters and has done some really interesting things with gender roles and the evolution of relationships. I have a couple of her other series in French, and hoped for the day we would get more in English. May this be the first of many!

As for this current announcement, Black Rose Alice enters our still vampire-hungry market with a story about a young singer who survives an accident only to find his body has never felt right since. A string of suicides by those close to him act as catalysts for a new life of romance, drama and potentially tasty looking necks.

Terra Formars

With My Love Story!!  I’m smitten with the Japanese covers. I love a title with characters that actually look like people. Too pretty can easily be too much sometimes. My Love Story!! is written by the creator of High School Debut, which I thought was a fun read, so that’s another point in its favour. The downside of My Love Story!!  is it’s promoted as a love triangle story, which I’m not a big fan of. Sure almost all romances use this at some point or another but, like a cast of characters that’re too pretty to be believed, reading story after story that tends to end in watching the more likable and loyal person get left on the curb is more than a little tiring. How will I feel about” the unattractive Takeo Gouda, his cool and attractive childhood friend Sunagawa, and the pure Yamato, whose specialty is making candy*”? We shall see!

Terra Formars
is the only title on the list that’s entirely new to me. It looks pretty cool though, even though the plot makes me laugh. It takes place years in the future when a team of colonists go to Mars only to discover that the mold and cockroaches they sent ahead to help prepare the land for living have since mutated into super strong humanoid cockroaches. Oops! The manga series – currently six volumes long – then follows a group of soldiers sent to get rid of them.

And last but not least, there’s Time Killers: Kazue Kato Short Story Collection. This one really excites me. As the title explains, Time Killers is a collection of short stories by Kazue Kato, creator of Blue Exorcist. I love reading creators’ short stories. The boundaries of a short story can bring out a person’s best work or at least some of their most creative as they can explore ideas that might not see success in lengthier formats. Admittedly, I got tired of Blue Exorcist and dropped it at volume six, but I did love the earlier volumes so I’m hoping to re-experience some of that same adoration in these shorts.

We don’t have dates yet for these releases, but my thanks goes to ANN for the existing details*. Looking forward to them, Viz!

PR: Spiral Into Madness With Deluxe Complete Edition of UZUMAKI from VIZ Media!

VIZ MEDIA RELEASES A DELUXE, HARDCOVER OMNIBUS EDITION OF JUNJI ITO’S CELEBRATED HORROR MANGA UZUMAKI

An Isolated Seaside Town Spirals Into Madness As A Mysterious Infestation Grows

San Francisco, CA, October 17, 2013 – VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), the largest distributor and licensor of anime and manga in North America, has announced the release of the UZUMAKI Deluxe Edition. The new 3-in-1 hardcover version of creator Junji Ito’s inventive horror manga (graphic novel) about the gradual decent into madness of a seaside town overrun with spirals features a new cover design as well as 12 pages of new full-color interior artwork.

The UZUMAKI Deluxe Edition, now available is published under the VIZ Signature imprint, is rated ‘T+’ for Older Teens, and carries an MSRP of $27.99 U.S. / $32.00 CAN.

Kurouzu-cho, a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan, is cursed. According to Shuichi Saito, the withdrawn boyfriend of teenager Kirie Goshima, their town is haunted not by a person or being but by a pattern: uzumaki, the spiral, the hypnotic secret shape of the world. It manifests itself in everything from seashells and whirlpools in water to the spiral marks on people’s bodies, the insane obsessions of Shuichi’s father and the voice from the cochlea in our inner ear. As the madness spreads, the inhabitants of Kurozu-cho are pulled ever deeper into a whirlpool from which there is no return!

“Junji Ito takes one of the most ubiquitous designs found in nature, the spiral, and uses it as the foundation for a truly terrifying story,” says Masumi Washington, Senior Editorial Director. “This beautiful new hardcover UZUMAKI Deluxe Edition is a wonderful showcase for Ito’s unique, eye-catching art style and also makes a fun and frightening addition to this year’s Halloween season. Readers will never look at the world around them in the same way ever again after reading this masterpiece from one of the most acclaimed creators of horror manga!”
