Viz Media Announces New Vampire Knight and Multiple Princes

Viz Media Announces New Vampire Knight and Multiple Princes

I started a new job! I moved! And the manga world kept on spinning! Bear with me, reader,s as I play catch-up on the past month of manga mayhem and shiny madness over the next few days.

At July’s Anime Expo, Viz Media announced three new manga titles for their Shojo Beat imprint:

The Demon Prince of Momochi House – Aya Shouoto
Meteor Prince – Meca Tanaka
Vampire Knight: Life – Matsuri Hino

The Demon Prince of Momochi House is about a young woman who inherits a  home that sits on the border between the human and spirit realm. Now tasked with maintaining that careful balance, she arrives at her new home only to discover that a young man is already there doing her job, and he refuses to leave. Throw in a sexy demon and the fact mr. stranger is eye-candy himself and I’ve no doubt mystery, fluff, flaunts and feelings await us.

This is Aya Shouoto’s third title to be licensed in English, the first being Yen Press’s He’s My Only Vampire, followed by Viz Media’s Kiss of the Rose Princess. I haven’t gotten to read any of her work yet, but I’m smitten by the artwork every time these licenses are announced. This newest one is thus automatically added to my must-try list as well. The first volume of The Demon Prince of Momochi House is scheduled for release in July 2015.

Meteor Prince is another title where I hope I can judge it by its cover, because it looks SO CUTE (pictured top left). The last time I read a book by Meca Tanaka, it was an old CMX title called Omukae Desu. I recall it being a cute story, but nothing especially memorable. It’s fun seeing how much her art has evolved over the years though, and I could never resist a shojo with that cover style. The story sounds as weird as I recall from her however. Meteor Prince is about a young woman whose string of misfortunes have earned her the nickname “The Queen of Bad Luck”. Just when she thinks she can’t get any unluckier, things take a turn when a naked, pretty-boy, alien prince falls out of the sky and proclaims her to be the one and only special someone he’s traveled to Earth to mate with. I suppose that could potentially be considered better fortune?

The first volume of Meteor Prince is scheduled for release in January 2015, and is currently available to pre-order on Amazon CAN|US.

Last but never least for Viz Media is a new short story for Vampire Knight. Vampire Knight: Life takes place directly after the series’ final book, but apparently isn’t something Matsuri Hino wanted included in the actual finale. Because of this the chapter won’t be printed in the last book scheduled for this October, but will be made available to buy digitally in December 2014 from VizManga.com. The bonus chapter further explores the relationship between Zero and Yuki.

Viz Media Plans a Dash of Shoujo for Autumn with new Shojo Beat Licenses

Viz Media Plans a Dash of Shoujo for Autumn with new Shojo Beat Licenses

After their recent new titles for Viz Signature and Shonen Jump, Viz Media added some new content for their Shojo Beat imprint last week including a new license:

Yukarism – Chika Shiomi

Yukarism is the  story of a young man with an uncanny ability to write about historical Japan. His secret is that he can actually travel back in time, allowing him to live through the eyes of his past life as a courtesan. While switching between his two lives, he also learns more about the strong connection he feels with a classmate.

It’s not often I use the word ‘he’ so often when writing about a shojo series. Still, it sounds neat. I hope a lot of the story takes place in his life as a courtesan, though I am also curious about what that past life means for his relationship with his classmate. How could I not with that picture above?

Chika Shiomi has been published several times in English previously, including Night of the Beasts, Rasetsu, Queen of Ragtonia, and Yurara. Andre previously reviewed Queen of Ragtonia, while I enjoyed what I read of Rasetsu.

Viz Media also announced they’d be releasing a special edition of Vampire Knight‘s final volume this October. It will include a variant cover and a mini art book. This limited edition copy will be available for $16.99 CAN, $14.99 US.

In added celebration for the series finale, there will also be a collection of Vampire Knight short prose stories released in December. Titled Vampire Knight: Fleeting Dreams, the collection will feature special full-colour artwork from Matsuri Hino. More information is available via Viz Media’s press release.

The upside to being staff at a con and never having a moment to visit the dealer’s room, is that you don’t end up spending much money. It doesn’t mean I’m rolling in dollar bills, alas, but I am always grateful to have a little budget wiggle room when new release day comes around.

My must-have buy this week is the first volume of Vertical Inc‘s new series, Wolfsmund. This past weekend at Animaritime, Ed Chavez spoke about the artist’s work as assistant to both the creators of Emma and Berserk, as well as showed us some interior artwork. This is a book I definitely need to have.

Victoria’s Favourites: Top 20 Manga (Part 04)

Victoria’s Favourites: Top 20 Manga (Part 04)

The hardest part about making this list was assigning the order and I replayed with the rankings over and over again. Nailing it down was the most difficult for the top ten titles or so, because all of them are ones I absolutely adore and it was very challenging to say I liked one more than the other. In fact, I only came up with the final order when I asked myself a question concerning the top five, which I am about to finally share.

That question was this: if there were only five manga series I could read for the rest of my life, which ones would I choose?

Without further ado, here are my choices.

Review: Vampire Knight (Vol. 15)

Vampire Knight (Vol. 15)

Manga-ka: Matsuri Hino

Synopsis: “With Kaname missing, Yuki must now step in as acting head of her clan to maintain the fragile peace between the human and vampire societies. Will she be able to regain the trust of the vampire aristocrats, much less Aido?”

The majority of the Vampire Knight volumes set after the time jump have been very Kaname-centric. Some of his mystery is revealed while even more secrets appear. However, in this volume Kaname takes a step back and allows the focus to return to Yuki, as she takes the knowledge she has learned and puts it into practice.

Year in Review: Victoria’s Top 5 Best Manga of 2011

Victoria's Top 5 Manga of 2011

So it’s that time of year again. Yes, the “everyone makes lists about the best/worst things of the year.” And you know what? I love it. Yes, love it. And so, I decided to put together my own list of my top five best manga of 2011.

To be eligible for this list, all a series had to do was have one book this year that I have read. Some (most actually) began in earlier years but they were the titles I looked forward to reading the most in these last twelve months. And so, without further ado, here are my top picks of the year.
