Seven Seas Returns to Wonderland With Two New Alice Licenses

Alice in the Country of Clover

Alice in the the Country of Hearts was a really pleasant surprise to me when I reviewed Yen Press’s omnibus edition last year. Since then, there’s been several spin-offs of the series released and there seems to be no sign of them stopping now. It’s great to see a series doing well, and even more interesting that two publishers are able to work to bring it out to fans.

AnimeNewsNetwork confirmed two new Alice licenses from Seven Seas that originally popped up on Amazon early December:

Alice in the Country of Clover: Ace of Hearts
Amazon US|CAN – July 2013, ($13.99/US, $15.99/CAN)

“Ace, the Knight of Heart Castle, is known throughout Wonderland not only for his master swordsmanship, but for his tendency towards cruelty. Can the charming Alice Lidell mellow Ace and his violent ways? Perhaps Ace will even fall in love with Alice…if he doesn’t kill her first.”

Alice in the Country of Hearts: Clockmaker’s Story
Amazon US|CAN – August 2013, ($13.99/US, $15.99/CAN)

“Julius Monrey is the grim Clockmaker of Wonderland, responsible for controlling the world’s time from his lonely Clock Tower, not to mention fixing the stopped clocks of the dead. When the beautiful Alice Liddell comes to live with and rely upon him, will her warm personality melt through his cool, apathetic heart, and bring about romantic feelings he never knew he had?”

Both these relases are written by the story’s original creator Quinrose, and drawn by Mamenosuke Fujimaru who is the artist for most of the Alice spin-off stories.

Of the two one-shots, I’m looking forward to the Clockmaker’s Story in particular. While reading the original multi-volume series, my favourite character was Julius and he was also one of the characters with some of the most unique responsibilities in the strange world of Wonderland. Granted, Ace was interesting though albeit prone to being pretty scary sometimes. I’m not sure how much I want to read about either of them getting romantically involved with Alice, but that is the purpose of these books so we’ll see who I end up preferring! It’s a really interesting opportunity for fans to get to pick and choose which books they want to read based on what couples they’re most interested in seeing played out.

Seven Seas has previously released two other series under the Alice in the Country of Clover arc of stories – Bloody Twins (starring the story’s Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum equivalents) and Cheshire Cat Waltz (starring the Cheshire Cat, Boris). They also have the first volume of their upcoming series Alice in the Country of Joker: Circus and Liar’s Game due out this February. Yen Press released the first volume of Alice in the Country of Hearts: Fanatic Rabbit (starring the March Hare) this past December.

Otaku USA: On The Shelf - December 12, 2012

My apartment has been a mess of plaster dust, missing amenities and awkwardly placed holes for the past two weeks – oh the joys of bathroom renovation! Thank goodness for new comics. There’s a bunch of neat new goodies out this week including a book of short stories from Kaoru Mori and an omnibus edition of the end to Yen Press‘s Chocolat. You can read the full list over at my On The Shelf article for Otaku USA.

Otaku USA: On The Shelf - November 22, 2012

Bathtubs! Bathtubs! Bathtubs! The theme of my favourite book out this week, Yen Press’s Thermae Romae. It’s a downright classy book and I hope it does well.

For more of my thoughts on Thermae Romae and some of the many other books out this week (ahhhh, November you spoil us!), then head on over to my weekly On The Shelf article for Otaku USA.

Review: Alice in the Country of Clover – Cheshire Cat Waltz (Vol. 01)

Alice in the Country of Clover: Cheshire Cat Waltz (Vol. 01)

Author: Quinrose
Manga-ka: Mamenosuke Fujimaru
Publisher: Seven Seas
Rating: Older Teen (16+)
Release Date: July 2012

Synopsis: “Alice has a new suitor – this time he’s pink and furry, otherwise known as Boris, the Chesire Cat. After being transported to the mysterious Country of Clover, Alice is relieved to discover that her friend Boris has come along. But she can’t enjoy a moment’s respite, as the Chesire Cat keeps hitting on her. Should she give in to such a self-indulgent cat? While Alice wavers, their relationship is sure to evolve – for better or worse is anyone’s guess. Sweet, yet dangerous. Love is risky business in Wonderland.”

It’s a bit weird coming from having recently read Yen Press’s release of Alice in the Country of Hearts to Seven Seas’ Alice in the Country of Clover. Both are the same story continued from a different angle, are written by the same person and drawn by artists very similar, but you can definitely feel the little tone changes created by being handled by two different teams of creators and adaptors. The differences are minor enough that most readers probably won’t notice though, making it an easy switch between for those who read one and are left wanting for more.

Seven Seas Adds Swords, Sorcery and Spirits With Three New Licenses

Seven Seas Licenses Three New Manga Series
Seven Seas slipped out some more licenses this week, confirming their acquisition of three new series with AnimeNewsNetwork.

Kanokon – Katsumi Nishino and Rin Yamaki
The Sacred Blacksmith – Isao Miura and Kōtarō Yamada
Zero’s Familiar – Noboru Yamaguchi and Nana Mochizuki

A listing for Kanokon originally showed up on Amazon (US/CAN) a couple weeks back. I originally thought it was the release of the light novels which Seven Seas had announced years ago but never released. Not the case. Instead Seven Seas will be releasing this manga adaptation of it as 2-in-1 omnibus editions for $19.99/US, $21.99/CAN each. The first book is due out, according to Amazon, in April 2013.

“Innocent country boy Oyamada Kouta transfers to a big city high school in his freshman year, and from day one, his life enters a world of crazy. First, a beautiful second-year student named Chizuru professes her love to him, then reveals that she is in fact a fox spirit. Frisky and flirty, she suggestively teases naive Kouta in front of his classmates, embarrassing him to no end. If that wasn’t enough, a gorgeous wolf spirit named Nozomu suddenly transfers to Kouta’s class and decides she wants the hapless country boy for herself. As fox girl and wolf girl vie for his heart, does Kouta have any say in this?” – Seven Seas via ANN

The Sacred Blacksmith will be a familiar looking title to manga-license followers. It was licensed by Tokyopop not long before the company was shut down, before they had released any volumes. The series will now be published by Seven Seas in single volume editions for $12.99/US, $14.99/CAN. There are no listings yet to suggest when the title’s first volume will come out.

“Like her father and grandfather before her, Cecily Campbell has entered the knighthood and joined the ranks of the Knight Guards of Houseman. Eager to do her heritage proud and defend her city, Cecily rushes to the marketplace to stop a madman from terrorizing the populace. She quickly realizes, however, that she is hopelessly outmatched and ill-prepared for an actual fight. A lone figure named Luke Ainsworth swoops to the rescue, a swordsman and blacksmith of much renown, who will repair the broken sword Cecily has inherited from her father and take her down a road of perilous adventure beyond her wildest dreams.” – Seven Seas via ANN

And last but not lest, Zero’s Familiar, which is also an adaptation of a light novel like the previous two. Seven Seas will release this series as 3-in-1 omnibus editions for $19.99/US, $21.99/CAN.

“In a world where sorcery reigns supreme, bumbling witch-in-training Louise Francoise le Blanc is known by her classmates at the Tristain Academy of Magic as “Louise the Zero.” During an important coming-of-age ritual, when each student must summon a lifelong familiar, Louise proves herself inept when she mistakenly conjures a teenage boy from earth. Now, whether she likes it or not, Louise “the Zero” and Saito, the ever-whining earth boy from Japan, are bound by the laws of magic as master and servant forever!” – Seven Seas via ANN

Of the three new licenses, I think I’m most curious about Zero’s Familiar. I’m a sucker for almost anything magic and fantasy related, and while The Sacred Blacksmith piques my interest with the more classic fantasy setting, the idea of a clumsy witch accidentally summoning a human boy as her familiar sounds too amusing to pass up.

The first volume of Girl Friends is out! At last! I’ve been wanting to read this in English for a long time and I’m thrilled Seven Seas has given us the opportunity. The omnibus format is great too – can’t complain about nearly 500 pages of yuri now can we? Girl Friends is also a special manga for Kuriousity as well with the English adaptation written by our very own, Shannon Fay!

Seven Seas has the bulk of this week’s releases including two other omnibus volumes. You can check out the complete list with more of my stunning commentary at my On The Shelf article for Otaku USA.

Seven Seas Announces License of Milk Morinaga Short Story Collection

Seven Seas Announces License for New Milk Morinaga Yuri

New manga licenses! While Anime Weekend Atlanta is taking place this weekend, Seven Seas preempted the convention with a manga license they confirmed with Anime News Network – Milk Morinaga’s Kisses, Signs, and Cherry Blossom Pink.

This is the second title by Milk Morinaga to be licensed in English, the first being her series, Girl Friends. KSCBP is another yuri series, but instead of the linear Girl Friends, is a collection of fourteen short stories. Seven Seas will release them all in one book (approx. 320 pages) in June 2013.

“Sakuraki Girls High—an all girls school where interrelated tales of love occur. In “Even if We’re Not Friends,” Nana and Hitomi have been dear friends since childhood, but when Nana gets into the exclusive Sakuraki High while Hitomi doesn’t, their true feelings for each other emerge. In “The Summer Closest to Heaven,” Natsuka is a ghost who resides at the school, still in love with one of the living students who is now the school nurse. In “A Kiss, Love, and a Prince,” Narumi gets her first kiss from Tachiba in the school play, and is shocked at being kissed by a girl.”

Having just recently finished Seven Seas’ very shortly upcoming edition of Girl Friends (Vol.01), this announcement makes me doubly excited. I really loved Milk Morinaga’s writing – it was definitely one of the more emotionally thought out and ‘real’ works I’ve read in manga. Ah the internal dramatic s of love. I’ve long since been a fan of her artwork thanks to a couple Japanese editions I own (and alas could not understand until now!), and let me assure you that it’s wonderful. Seven Seas also did a great job with the book, barring a few unfortunately placed little typos, so I’m happy to see this new Milk Morinaga title in their hands. It’ll be a long wait until next June!

Otaku USA: On The Shelf – September 12, 2012

Otaku USA: On The Shelf - September 12, 2012

Loveless returns! The top-note title for this week’s new releases is the ninth volume of Yun Kouga’s Loveless series, which Tokyopop cancelled after releasing the eighth back in 2009. I think it’s really neat that Viz Media made the decision to release the next volume of the series before starting back at the beginning. I’ll be rereading volumes one to eight this week so I can remember everything that’s happened. It’s been so long!

Other must-have-will-buy titles for me this week include Arata (Vol.11) and His Favourite (Vol.01). You can read the full list of titles out this week over at my On The Shelf article for Otaku USA.

Otaku USA: On The Shelf – September 5, 2012

Otaku USA: On The Shelf - September 5, 2012

It’s been a weird couple weeks, and part of that has lead to there being several weeks between my trips to my local comic store (Strange Adventures) to buy new manga. So bizarre! This week will be the tipping point though. A new Tezuka title, Message to Adolf, from Vertical Inc., new Viz Media volumes of Bleach, Bakuman and… a new volume of Fushigi Yugi: Genbu Kaiden after three years?!

Sold. You can check out the full list of titles that shipped this week over at my On The Shelf article for Otaku USA.

Take me back to the top!
