Manga Minis: Bye-Bye-Bye, SuBLime’s Boys’ Love Sync and Vertical goes Digital

Manga Minis: Bye-Bye-Bye, and SuBLime's Boys' Love Sync

We’re saying some sad good-byes to a couple things first in today’s mini news round-up, then cap things off with some interesting pieces of digital news to lighten things up at least a little:

Seven Sea‘s Adam Arnold has responded to a fan’s inquiry to the status of their series, Blood Alone. Because of a publisher switch-up, the title is currently not available for Seven Seas to license past where it’s already released. With Blood Alone now owned by Kodansha, Seven Seas doesn’t see the license availability changing because of Kodansha’s own English branch. The last volume of Blood Alone published in English was volume six in April 2012. (News credit to Conner)

I really liked this series, so it’s sad we’ll likely never see volume seven published in English. I’ll keep my fingers crossed though! Series look so lonely sitting unfinished on the shelf…

Works

Erica Friedman of ALC Publishing has published a post  announcing her decision to cease future publications. ALC Publishing has published several yuri books and, up until JManga’s recent shutdown, was collaborating with the website to release several yuri series digitally. Erica cites reasons including a poor buying market, fans lack of interest in digital titles and a lack of support from North America’s largest publisher of yuri, Seven Seas.

It’s a real shame when any publisher is forced to pull the plug for reasons beyond their control, and Erica’s worked very hard to cater to a niche market over the years. As a reader and collector of yuri, I’ve enjoyed ALC’s previous titles and I’m grateful that Erica will still be promoting the genre and sharing her thoughts via her website, Okazu (which has recently gotten an address change, so update those links folks!).

SuBLime announced a new project in late February – a joint manga and light novel release that will be simultaneously released in Japan and in English. The title is Into Illusion, written by Reiko Yoshihara, the author best known for Ai no Kusabi. The artist for the manga is Ryo Tateishi, whose work on the cover provided by SuBLime is enough to make any boys’ love fan interested! You can check out their post for the eye-candy and more information. This series is scheduled to start at the end of April.

And lastly, keeping on the digital train, Vertical Inc. will be releasing a number of their series for digital purchase starting this Spring. The current planned titles are Twin Spica, The Drops of God, and 7 Billion Needles with availability to be made on Amazon’s Kindle, Apple’s iBookstore and the NOOK. This is good news for those who prefer their collections condensed digitally, plus Vertical has previously said that their Twin Spica series is already going out of print so this offers it a second lease at readership life. Swag Bag: Prequel, Vampires and Caramel Pudding

Swag Bag: Prequels, Vampires and Caramel Pudding

Swag Bag time! I had a little shopping hiatus the past month, but, believe me, I’ve made up for it in the last couple weeks. So, without further ado, here’s the first of a few Swag Bag posts to cover it all!

To start things off with a dose of boys’ love, I bought the Digital Manga oneshot, Caramel. My first impression was that the little guy has really silly looking hair. Second impression was it looks adorable. Both were correct – the little guy had silly hair and the story was super sweet, albeit a little sad being so short.

My impulse purchase of the day was Dark Horse‘s Blood-C (Vol.01). I don’t have any real interest in the Blood franchise, and my knowledge of this anime stops at CLAMP’s involvement. Still, the cover was really nice and the interior artwork looked good too. It looks very CLAMP-like actually, I’d say very likely inspired by their more recent works such as Tsubasa. We’ll see how the monster hunting itself entertains as I read it.

Fushigi Yugi Genbu Kaiden (Vol.11)

Something that is never impulse and always a must-have-right-now is Naoki Urasawa’s work. This week that was 21st Century Boys (Vol.02). It’s the last volume in the 20th Century Boys story. It’s so weird knowing this series is now done after all these years. I’ve already read this final volume and I’ve gotta say… I can’t remember who ‘that’ is. Oops. Time to re-read!

It never stops being weird buying a new volume of Fushigi Yugi though, such as this week’s Fushigi Yugi Genbu Kaiden (Vol.11). Now this is a series I’ve been reading a long time. It was one of my first manga from back in the Animerica Extra days of serialization. This prequel series only has one volume left, however, and the downside to it being a prequel is we all know how it’s going to end. So sad! But it’s so good.

Then it was meta territory with Bakuman (Vol. 18) – manga about making manga! This series is fantastic; I adore every volume, even with the awkward romantic subplots. This volume addresses the intensity of manga deadlines when the two leads launch yet another series. How many pages a month!? Freaky.

I finished off my Viz Media purchases with Pokemon Adventures (Vol.15) and Afterschool Charisma (Vol.07). There was quite a wait since the last volumes of each but fortunately neither are especially complicated in the plot department (though telling the clones apart in Afterschool Charisma isn’t always easy).

And then what’s a week without an omnibus? I’m a few months late on this one but I was pleased to buy Young Miss Holmes (Casebook 3-4). The first volume was cute with this precocious niece of Sherlock Holmes solving mysteries. I loved the short cameo from the dowdy Sherlock and Watson as well.

And then lastly for manga I had to nab a digital copy of Sword and Mist, released by SuBLime. It’s a digital only release but I’ve made my peace with these as an occasional thing, and I can’t deny that SuBLime puts out a great product. This title was a must have because it’s by Hayate Kuku. She’s only had one other series released in English – Love Sickness by Digital Manga – but I really loved it. Her masculine characters and sense of humor reminds me a lot of one of my BL favorites, Naono Bohra, who unfortunately hasn’t been as embraced by English publishers as I’d like. In any case, Sword and Mist! It’s got manly men, assassins, feudal China and cross-dressing – how could I resist?

The Adventures of Superhero GirlAnd then finally was a new book by a friend of mine, Faith Erin Hicks. Out now from Dark Horse is a hardcover, full color compilation of her web comic, The Adventures of Superhero Girl. It’s been a while since I read these comic strips so it’s been fun re-experiencing all the funny in-jokes about comics and super heroes. It’s an entertaining and worthwhile purchase for sure, and I’m looking forward to finishing it cover to cover again.

Seven Seas Goes To Console War With World War Blue

Seven Seas Goes To Console War With World War Blue

Within days of announcing three new manga titles, Seven Seas had another to add their growing 2013 announcement list:

World War Blue – Anastasia Shestakova & Crimson

Now this is a unique sounding plot. Whether or not that means it’s a good use of said uniqueness remains to be seen, but it’s definitely got me curious. World War Blue is a ‘retelling’ of video game console wars in Japan with the consoles themselves represented as classic fantasy-style parodies of particular characters. When the Segua Kingdom and the Ninteldo Empire face-off, who comes out the victor? I wonder if gaming history counts as a spoiler…

The series is nine volumes long and each release will contain “a wide array of extra content, such as colorful maps, pin-ups, detailed character bios, and fun bonus features that delve into video game history and lore.” Volume one is scheduled for a July 2013 release.

Otaku USA: On The Shelf – February 20, 2013

Otaku USA: On The Shelf - February 20, 2013

Not much manga out this week, which is a little odd for a month’s mid-week. Maybe there wasn’t enough manga-karma left after the manga licenses last week? Who knows! Still some good stuff though~ You can read my thoughts on this week’s releases at the usual place, Otaku USA’s On The Shelf article.

Dance in the Vampire Bund Omnibus (Vol.02) [Amazon CAN, Amazon US, RightStuf]

Centaurs, Succubi & Lamias – Seven Seas Licenses Three New Titles

Centaurs, Succubi & Lamias - Seven Seas Licenses Three New Titles

Seven Seas was one of several publishers who took February 14th as a sign to dish out the treats with new licenses. Via a press release sent out mid-day, the company revealed three new manga licenses that sound almost as unique as their leads look:

A Centaur’s Life – Kei Murayama (November 2013)
Love in Hell – Reiji Suzumaru (October 2013)
Monster Musume – OKAYADO (October 2013)

All three series will begin in the Fall of this year and are all scheduled to be released as single volume books. The similarities don’t stop there, as each title stars a non-human female character including one being a centaur-girl – weird!

… but also intriguing. Of the three, A Centaur’s Life looks the most interesting. I really like what I’ve seen of the artwork (look at that adorable art above on the right!), and the story sounds really cute simply for how simple it sounds in contrast with its characters. Centaurs, horned-devils and winged-individuals all going through the trials of being teenagers in school – it’s so odd it just might work.

Love In Hell is about a young man who dies after a drunken accident and finds himself down in Hell. There he meets a mischievous devil girl who is deigned his guide to eternal torment unless he can work with her to repent for his sins. Eep? I’m on the fence on this title – art and synopsis is enough to make me curious, but the kind of humour a series like this has can make or break it for me. We’ll see what I think when volume one comes out in October.

And lastly there’s Monster Musume, which I can definitely say has not grasped my interest. It’s not the kind of series I’d pick up voluntarily but I’m sure it’s got an audience out there who’ll love this license, which is great. Market diversity, we have it! The story takes place in a future where human beings have learned that supernatural creatures really exist. Working together to try and incorporate them into society, a government exchange program is started, one in which a male volunteer soon finds himself host to three attractive monster girls with breasts to spare and hormones to flair. Boobs.

With supernatural creatures like vampires and zombies being such cultural hits in recent years, it’s neat seeing Seven Seas try to poke part of that audience from a different angle. Lots of fan-service layered on top I doubt hurts in these instances either. You can read more detailed descriptions of each story in Seven Seas’ press release, while credit for the news originally goes to AnimeNewsNetwork.

PR: Centaurs & Succubi & Lamias, Oh My!

LOS ANGELES, February 14, 2013 – Seven Seas Entertainment is delighted to add a unique trio of supernatural manga series to its Fall 2013 lineup—the slice-of-life high school comedy, A Centaur’s Life, the devilishly naughty and irreverent Love in Hell, and the whacked out harem comedy with fantastical babes, Monster Musume.

“There’s growing interest in new stories about exotic supernatural creatures that we don’t typically see,” says Adam Arnold, Managing Editor of Seven Seas Entertainment. “Move over, vampires and zombies, there are new monsters in town!”

Each of the three series presents a twist to the typical supernatural manga:

A Centaur’s Life is a wholly original take on the slice-of-life genre, focusing on the daily school life of supernatural creatures, in particular a sweet centaur girl.

Love in Hell takes place in a setting that is endlessly fascinating—Hell—and centers on the (after)life of a regular guy and his twisted relationship to his succubus guide.

Monster Musume presents a classic harem comedy setup, but the female cast is comprised of a lamia (i.e. a snake girl), a centaur, and a harpy.

What better time to launch Love in Hell and Monster Musume than around Halloween, in October 2013? These will be followed in November 2013 by A Centaur’s Life.

Seven Seas Finds A Fairy Tale With Dictatorial Grimoire License

Seven Seas Finds A Fairy Tale With Dictatorial Grimoire License

Seven Seas is hopping into the licensing ring for 2013 with their first new revealed title of the year:

Dictatorial Grimoire – Ayumi Kanou

“Upon receiving a posthumous letter from the dead father he never knew, (Grimm) Otogi transfers to a new school and moves into an abandoned mansion as part of his inheritance. There, he finds a manuscript that reveals the truth about his ancestors: the Brothers Grimm made a deal with mystical beings known as the Märchen Demons, who now have a claim on Otogi’s life. With a dashing male Cinderella as his guide, can Otogi Grimm unlock the power of the manuscript and stop the fairy tale demons before they destroy him first?” – Seven Seas

Seven Seas will be releasing the first volume, subtitled Cinderella, in September 2013 for $13.99/US, $15.99/CAN. Pre-orders became available for the title on Amazon (US/CAN) shortly after being listed for retailers to order from their distributor, MacMillan (source). The series is three volumes total and, like their recent release of Alice in the Country of Joker, will be a larger trim size and include a couple  full colour pages.

Dictatorial Grimoire is the artist’s second work published in English. Ayumi Kanou’s adaptation spin-off for the Tales of the Abyss games, Jade’s Secret Memories, was released by Bandai Entertainment last year.

With a pretty cover and a fairy tale basis for the story, this series sounds right up my alley. And there’s classic character gender-bending – even better! I love reading stories like this and seeing how the author incorporates and reinvents familiar faces. Amazon.jp has some preview pages for the interior artwork as well, only making me look forward to it more.
