ANN Review: Strawberry Panic Omnibus

ANN Review: Strawberry Panic! Omnibus

The omnibus trend continues as I tackled the collected edition of Strawberry Panic for a review over on AnimeNewsNetwork.

Overall I had fun reading this purely because it was so silly; cute but campy. The art was beautiful but the characters pretty shallow. It really felt like a big stereotype of Yuri as a genre, with a debatably healthy dose of cliches straight out of harlequin novels. Too bad about the lack of any realistic romance though, though at least I wasn’t really expecting that going in. Ah well, it was shiny?

Swag Bag – One Shots, Complete Sets and Shoujo Galore

Despite the healthy dose of new titles coming out, there wasn’t much in the way of new titles I was looking for when I hit up my local comic shop this week. But Strange Adventures never fails to offer and lo and behold they had stacks and stacks of manga sets for cheap!

Though I may’ve wanted more, saving for holiday shopping took precedant this week so I opted for only three semi-complete series. I purchased volumes 1-14 of Ouran Host Club, volumes 1-10 of Beauty Pop and volumes 1-8 of Monkey High!. I fell in love with Ouran Host Club upon watching the anime (which has a fantastic dub thanks to Funimation). As for both Monkey High! and Beauty Pop, I’ve read a few volumes of each from my local library and am looking forward to reading the rest. Time for some marathoning – but which to start on first?

In contrast to the sets, I picked up a handful of one-shots as well. For some more shoujo-goodness, I purchased Short-Tempered Melancholic, Heaven’s Will and Gaba Kawa. I also purchased the horror (?) manga Goth which I reviewed on Tuesday. Heaven’s Will seems the most interesting of the batch simply because of the premise – girl who can see spirits teams up with a vampire and cross-dressing exorcist. We shall see how this plays out.

And lastly, and more recent, I bought the Seven Seas omnibus edition of Hayate x Blade. I liked the first volume so hopefully that continues for this edition which covers the first three.

Those were my purchases for the week – how about you? With this week marking Black Friday/Thanksgiving time for Americans, I imagine there are many manga-fans out for good bargains as well. Any especially fabulous finds? Feel free to share!

Swag Bag – Anime, Anime and More Anime

Not a whole lot of buying last week as I awaited a hefty RightStuf order to be delivered. And delivered it was! I prefer buying manga in-store and at conventions so when I make big purchases online, they usually consist primarily of anime.

Note to all Canadians: now is the perfect time to get together some friends, head over to RightStuf.com, fill up your cart with oodles of goodies (check out their clearance section for amazing deals), getting that free shipping and taking full advantage of our strong dollar. Save lots of money and get some awesome stuff!

In my box of shininess this time, I continued a recent buying spree of Funimation box sets which always impress with me low prices, great selection and amazing dubs. Their S.A.V.E line is really phenomenal – an entire series for $12? Try justifying to me how that isn’t affordable (advance note: you can’t).

My series of choice this time were Jyo-Oh-Sei, a sci-fi survival series of which I really enjoyed the manga; Baccano, an anime cominbing violent mafia wars and alchemy; Hell Girl (S01), an episodic series about a website where you can ask to have someone banished to Hell; and Eden of the East, which I’ve heard so many amazing reviews for from people I know, that I had to give it a go. Thus far I’ve watched Hell Girl, which was really good and had a continuing plot line I didn’t expect, and the first half of Baccano. The first four episodes made little to no sense but after that the story picks up pace and wow is it something else! Very fun.

The final boxset of the purchase was Media Blaster’s new release of Magic Knight Rayearth which is a digitally remastered version in celebration of CLAMP’s 15th Anniversary. I’ve already seen the series via VHS, but the quality I’ve seen of these remastered episodes is more than reason enough to finally upgrade that series to DVD. I look forward to the shiny nostalgia of this title.

Bunny Drop (Vol. 02)Manga always needs to sneak its way in somehow though and I bought two books that I absolutely adored upon reading. First was the second volume of Bunny Drop from Yen Press. Following a man taking in a young girl and going through the realistic motions of caring for her is both heartwarming and impressively grounded. The other book was volume of The Last Uniform from Seven Seas, a positively adorable series about schoolgirls and their feelings for one another. Both books made me very happy.

In a disappointing follow-up to my last Swag Bag, the DelRey omnibus edition I bought of Mushishi fell apart into a pile of loose out-of-order pages when I sat down to read it! Looks like I got a bad bind. I hope it’s a one-off and not from a bad batch out there. If this is some kind of omen about DelRey manga then, well, it came too late.

So what’ve you bought recently? Anything you’d recommend or something coming up?

13 Days of Halloween: Hollow Fields

Hollow Fields

Shannon, here – Halloween is my favourite holiday and to honour it I’m counting down 13 manga throughout the month that I think best capture the Halloween spirit. They aren’t all horror manga, as to me Halloween is about more than scares: it’s about a sense of fun and wonder. It’s about discovering that there may be more to this world than meets the eye. So with that in mind, there’s everything on this list from action-packed shounen to romantic-comedy to children’s manga to some lock-the-doors-and-leave-the-lights-on horror. (See all 13 Days of Halloween so far…)

4. Hollow Fields

There are a ton of OEL manga that have Halloween trappings, such as My Dead Girlfriend or I Luv Halloween. Weirdly enough, it’s a work by an Australian creator that really manages to capture the spirit of this very North American holiday. Madeline Rosca’s Hollow Fields doesn’t take place on Halloween, but the creepy setting and child protagonists still makes it a good manga to read in October.

Lucy Snow is nervous about going away to boarding school, especially when she accidently ends up at a school for young mad scientists. Instead of gym, math and English, at Hollow Fields the kids practice corpse robbing and building giant robots. This is all new to Lucy, who lacks not only the know-how but also the ruthlessness her fellow students posses. But she had better learn fast, as the every week the student with the lowest grade is sent off to the windmill, a lonely place where the teachers conduct their experiments and no student has ever returned.

Madeline Rosca’s art is a nice mix of cuteness and steampunk. Her character designs are fun and manage to be cute while still unsettling. The best example of this is the school faculty – the teachers no longer have human bodies but reside in giant wind-up dolls. The story also walks a fine line between sweet and scary, especially as the series progresses and it becomes clearer what exactly is going on at the school.

In the name of transparency, I want to note that I do freelance work for Seven Seas, the publisher behind Hollow Fields. I also want to note that Blood Alone omnibus comes out in April 2011, and is also good Halloween time reading!

13 Days of Halloween: Arkham Woods

Shannon, here – Halloween is my favourite holiday and to honour it I’m counting down 13 manga throughout the month that I think best capture the Halloween spirit. They aren’t all horror manga, as to me Halloween is about more than scares: it’s about a sense of fun and wonder. It’s about discovering that there may be more to this world than meets the eye. So with that in mind, there’s everything on this list from action-packed shounen to romantic-comedy to children’s manga to some lock-the-doors-and-leave-the-lights-on horror. 7. Arkham Woods

Seven Seas has a lot of titles that would fit on this list, but one that stands out is the lovecraftian OEL manga Arkham Woods. Kirsti’s mom recently found out that she is losing her sight. In order to pay for the operation, they need to sell Kirsti’s great-uncle’s creepy home. However, that may be hard to do since the house sits on a portal to an ancient and unspeakable evil, a feature likely to scare away potential buyers.

Arkham Woods is a nicely paced horror story. The tension and the weirdness just keep mounting until the climax, where the cast must stop Cthulu himself from taking over our world. The series plays pretty fast and lose with the Cthulu mythos, but it still manages to share its atmosphere of weird, otherworldly horror. If you’re not familiar with H.P. Lovecraft’s works, don’t worry, the manga tells you everything you need to know.

If you want to check out Arkham Woods yourself, Seven Seas has put the entire thing online here.

(In the interest of full disclosure, I want to note that I’ve worked for Seven Seas as a freelance editor. In the interest of self-promotion, I want to note that anyone who likes dark and twisted manga should buy Amnesia Labyrinth as soon as it comes out.)

A Certain Toradora Labyrinth – Seven Seas Reveals New Titles

First I was without internet for a few days and then SDCC popped up to distract me but that’s no reason to let a string of manga releases go unappreciated here on Kuriousity! Seven Seas spent some time dropping fun hints over Twitter for three new manga licenses while the eager and informed deciphered them. A press release then confirmed the titles which are all due for release in 2011:

Amnesia Labyrinth – Nagaru Tanigawa
“When high school student Souji Kushiki, an academic achiever and talented athlete from a well-to-do family, returns home from boarding school, he finds that his sisters Harumi, Youko, and Saki have changed. However, when Souji arrives at school the next day, he learns that, during the summer, one of the students in his class was pushed to his death in front of a subway train. And what’s more, two other students were stabbed by an unknown culprit. Are the victims linked, and could Souji’s sisters have anything to do with the murders?” (Vol. 01 coming February 2011)

Tora Dora – Yuyuko Takemiya/Yasu
“It’s Ryuji’s first day in junior high school and it seems as if things are looking up. He gets to sit in between his only friend, Yusaku, and more importantly, the girl he’s secretly crushing on, Minori Kushieda. But just when he thinks the stars are aligned in his favor, he unwittingly crosses the most feared girl in school, Taiga Aisaku, making her into his arch enemy. To top it off, Taiga has moved in right next door to Ryuji and happens to be Minori’s best friend! Can this school year possibly get any worse?!” (Vol. 01 coming March 2011)

A Certain Scientific Railgun – Kazuma Kamach/Kiyotaka Haimura
“Welcome to a world where mysticism and science collide, and supernatural powers are derived from either science or religion. At the heart of this world is Academy City, an advanced metropolis whose population is comprised mostly of students. Meet Mikoto Misaka, the third most powerful Level 5 esper in Academy City. Together with her best friend Kuroko Shirai and the other members of Judgment, a student-run law enforcement agency, Mikoto delves deep into the dark heart of the scientific sprawl she calls home, and uncovers secrets she wishes she hadn’t!” (Vol. 01 coming June 2011).

Personally I’m pretty indifferent to the titles themselves, all being new to me aside from in passing mention (though Toradora sounds cute), but it is promising seeing Seven Seas releasing some new titles and apparently very fandom-supported titles at that. Hope the fans enjoy!

LOS ANGELES, July 20, 2010 – From Sunday, July 18th to Tuesday, July 20th, Seven Seas released a series of cryptic anagrams and hints via Twitter (twitter.com/gomanga) that, when deciphered, reveal the titles of Seven Seas’ newest manga licenses. Amnesia Labyrinth (volume 1 coming February 2011)

Seven Seas Picks Up Gunslinger Girls, Blood Alone

Blood Alone, Gunslinger Girl

Can’t let anime have all the license-rescue fun – Seven Seas has leapt into the fray of serial-saves and has picked up the rights to Gunslinger Girl (“…a dark action-packed series about a secret counter-terrorism unit that transforms young girls into ruthless killers.”) and Blood Alone (“…a beautifully drawn, lyrical Vampire manga…”). Both stories were originally published by ADV Manga and Infinity Studios, respectively.

Seven Seas will be releasing both titles in omnibus format for their first halves with single volumes rounding off the series’. Both will have new translation and lettering work done as well with release dates starting in February 2011. You can check out the complete press release for all the details.

Along with these titles, Seven Seas has also confirmed the omnibus editions of several of their previously released series: Strawberry Panic and Venus Versus Virus. They’re also announced omnibus editions of Hayate x Blade and Inukami.

As someone who’s been picking up random volumes of Seven Seas books for a while, I’m really excited to see so many omnibus editions. Even at risk of sounding like a commercial, they’re a great cost-effective way to check out a series that has troublesome-to-find volumes from first-runs. I’ve recently picked up the first volume of Hayate x Blade but think I’ll wait for the omnibus edition for the next two – feels like a good series to read it decent-sized chunks too. Omnibus – the continued wave of manga print future?

Also recently appearing on Amazon are listings for several potentially-new series from Seven Seas: Dragon Blade Warrior, Femme Ares: Girl God of War and Master Thieves: Phantom & Darkness.

PR: Seven Seas Relaunches Gunslinger Girl & Blood Alone

Seven Seas Relaunches Gunslinger Girl & Blood Alone

(LOS ANGELES, April 8, 2010) – Seven Seas is pleased to announce the revival of two fan-favorite manga series—Gunslinger Girl and Blood Alone. Featuring all-new translations and lettering, Seven Seas will release the previously-published books in omnibus editions that contain three volumes in one, priced at $15.99 each. Seven Seas will then introduce subsequent books in the series that have never been published in North America.

“We’re thrilled to get the chance to put our stamp of quality on these two great titles,” says Seven Seas Senior Editor Adam Arnold. “Since neither of these books were continued by their previous American publishers, we’re excited to be rescuing these series for existing fans. Plus, our low-cost omnibus editions of the early volumes in the series make them the ideal entry point for new fans as well.”
