Diamond Manga Previews: January 2012

Diamond Manga Previews: January 2012

Diamond Comics is North America’s largest comic book distributor. If you have a local comic store in your area, it’s very likely they get their books from them. Every month Diamond releases a giant magazine, Previews, containing all the products they have – from comics, manga, DVDs and merchandise – that will be released starting in about two months’ time, giving retailers and buyers the chance to put their orders in before shipping dates.

Previews - January 2012

I’ve been picking up the Previews magazines for years, oogling all the different books coming out from publishers and wondering how long until the stacks of Preview magazines I’ve yet to get rid of will crush me in my sleep. Starting now I’ll be writing about the different manga content published in Previews each month here on Kuriousity. This includes all the manga titles listed, the top Manga sellers as tracked by Diamond and mention of other things of interest I spot. With the small two month window, Diamond Previews has rarely been the source of new licenses but it’s a great reminder and showcase of all the books coming our way soon, plus the perfect time to get your orders in, whether through Diamond or at your online retailer of choice.

I’ll also be including with these monthly Preview posts a downloadable PDF that you can print off and check off the manga  you’d like to order. Then it’s as easy as bringing it into your local comic or book store – wherever in your area that orders in through Diamond Comics! Currently the list is just the names and does not include the Diamond order codes. I’ve never come across a store that requires them for ordering but if yours does, let me know and I’ll include them on subsequent files:

Free Comic Book Day 2009 Overview

Almost a month after the event, here I come with my earlier-promised recap of Free Comic Book Day at Strange Adventures in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Waited these weeks to get my pictures uploaded onto my computer, and you know what? The majority of them were horrible! Ah well, that’s what I get for not getting to know my camera better before taking ‘er out, right?

This year Calum, manager of Strange Adventures, set out to top his incrediable feat of last year’s FCBD where he gave out over 15,000 free comics to eager readers. Well, success was had and faster than any of us expected.

Free Comic Book Day 2009!

Free Comic Book Day

Regretful that I’m so last minute reminding folks about the glory that is Free Comic Book Day! On the first Saturday of May, comic book stores around the world offer just what the name would suggest: free comics!

Tomorrow being the 2009 date (May 2nd), definitely make time to check out your local comic book stores and pick up some goodies, meet some people and have fun with the deals, atmosphere and good times that can only be achieved with free swag enjoyed by many!

If comics aren’t your thing, there’s something for manga fans as well (though admittedly not as much as has been made available in the past by publishers). This year Viz will be offering a 32-page Shonen Jump edition that includes a chapter of Stan Lee and Hiroyuki Takei’s collaboration piece: Ultimo. You can see a preview of the free booklet here.

As a volunteer, I’ll be lending a hand to the amazing folks of Halifax’s Strange Adventures in handing out over 20,000 free comics! If you’re in the area, be sure to stop by. Along with free swag there’ll be some surprise appearances, artists on-site to draw some goodies for the young ones (including Faith Erin Hicks, creator of Zombies Calling, and MTCopyright, artist of Whore of Turfan) and a bunch of great in-store deals!

Expect an overview and photos of the day here in Halifax soon after. All the best to everyone out there; enjoy your free comics!

FCBD 2008 Manga Recap

Free Comic Book Day 2008

Another successful Free Comic Book Day completed. There was a big turn out (as usual!) at Strange Adventures in downtown Halifax and many free comics to be had. Along with my joyfully larger assortment of X-men comic books and indie publications, I picked up a copy of Viz’s Shonen Jump sampler and Yen Press’s Maximum Ride preview issue.

Those who picked up Viz’s Shonen Jump sampler were treated with some exerts from Naruto, Bleach and Slum Dunk (which was in colour), three of the series currently running in the English edition of the popular manga anthology. A nice surprise was the pull out mini Bleach poster.

Yen Press’s preview issue of Maximum Ride was also something I was glad to have picked up. NaRae Lee’s artwork in this adaptation was really eye-catching, and though I’ve never read the original novels, I think this is a series I’ll be checking out. On the back of the preview was an advertisement for Yen Press’s upcoming monthly manga anthology, it’s first issue example sporting a picture from their recent license, Soul Eater. With a line up including that, Nabari No Ou, Maximum Ride and Svetlana’s new series, Nightschool, Yen+ is looking to be an impressive selection of titles for those looking for something different than the usual fares of Shonen Jump. Free Comic Book Day all across the country

Free Comic Book Day

Just in time for Free Comic Book Day on May 3rd, my Oh!Canada section has been updated with a list of comic shops across Canada. Organized by province, I looked into all that are listed for confirmation they were still running and sold anime/manga relevant merchandise (a daunting task but one that’s left me with lots of shiny new sites bookmarked). Of course if I’m missing any, please inform me and I’ll update it ASAP!

Also, several anime series were recently cut from YTV‘s schedule so TV viewers can check out my Anime in Canada page for the current schedule and offerings.

Back to FCBD, always lots of good stuff, from the chance to try out a bunch of new series as well as the sales on regular merchandise most stores put on. Manga-wise this year, keep an eye peeled for the usual free samplers: new to this year includes a Shonen Jump sampler and a Maximum Ride preview from Yen Press.

As for me, I plan to continue my 5-year, 8am tradition of being first in line with my buddies at Strange Adventures in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Nothing like good company, good food, sweet deals and an entire church auditorium full of free goodies. Hoping to see some new and familiar faces again this year!

Take me back to the top!
