Review: Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle (Vol. 19)

Synopsis:
“The Mafia-run world of Infinity would be a dangerous place even without the death-defying “chess” tournament that Princess Sakura and her companions have entered. But Sakura has decided to risk everything – even her friends’ lives – for the contest’s secret prize.”

While several books ago you may’ve thought this series was getting rather repetitive, the last few couple of volumes have certainly gotten the ball rolling in a big way. Here in volume nineteen, its one revelation after another as Sakura puts her own friends’ lives on the line in order to win a mysterious prize in the warrior chess game they find themselves battling in.

Review: Ghost Hunt (Vol. 07)

And will SPR crack the case in time to save one of their own from a terrible fate?”

After reading volume six, volume seven became one of those must-have-now volumes. Continuing with the escalating danger of the previous story, Mai has survived a traumatizing dream life of the last living moments of a girl gruesomely murdered. The investigative team continues to struggle with the strange layout of the house in order to find where the disappearing guests have gone.

Review: Air Gear (Vol. 09)

The fight between teams Kogarasumaru and Behmoth continues here in volume nine of Air Gear, with everything coming down to Ikki and Agito facing the Regalia-wielding, Akira. Blades are flashing and adrenaline pumping in this do-or-die fight previous volumes have led up to.

Review: Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle (Vol. 18)

After the drama in the previous volume, Yuko feels its time for the band of travellers to finally know what’s going on. The results of previous events still affect everyone harshly, including the world around them, before Mokona transports them all to a new dimension for more trials ahead.

Taisuke and Yuta continue their blind trip North in the hopes of finding their friends who’re in the hands of the ‘comrades’. Assassins are now being sent after Taisuke, to stop him before his powers awaken any further, and some with powers unlike anything Taisuke has ever imagined. The pair suddenly find themselves in the company of a boy and his younger sister, who’re running from their homicidal father whose powers are quite possibly the strongest any of them have seen yet.

If volume eleven left you craving more, than twelve will leave you begging. Watanuki’s life is unravelling, along with his grasp on reality, as his dreams begin overlapping into his consciousness.

Review: Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles (Vol. 17)

Synopsis:
“In mere minutes, Fai will be dead, and Kurogane’s only hope to save him is to make a deal with Yuko the Witch, a women he has never trusted. The deals sends Kurogane – alone – into the worst danger he has ever faced.”

Everything gets upped a notch in volume seventeen of Tsubasa. Fai is on his deathbed, with no options left to save him – short of asking for Yuko’s help. Reluctantly Kurogane makes a deal with the Witch, a deal that, through a few different passes of payment from character to character, leads to Sakura (unlike what the book’s summary would lead you to believe) embarking on a dangerous mission all on her own.

Review: Ghost Hunt (Vol. 01)

“Mai Taniyama and her classmates have heard the rumours that the creepy old high school is haunted – possibly by ghosts from the Second World War. So one rainy day they gather at the old school to tell ghost stories, hoping to attract one of the suspected spirits…”

Rounding off a week of ghost stories comes a review for the first volume of one of my favourite English released manga titles: Ghost Hunt. As the name would suggest, the name of the game is hunting ghosts and it’s no easy task. The story begins with Mai Taniyama, a high school girl who, through an unfortunate accident, meets the cold Shibuya, President of the Psychic Research Centre. After an incident leaves her in his financial debt, she agrees to work for him, and the hunting for ghosts begins!

Review: XXXHolic (Vol. 01)

Synopsis: “Watanuki Kimihiro is haunted by visions of ghosts and spirits. Seemingly by chance, he encounters a mysterious witch named Yuko, who claims she can help. In desperation he accepts, but realizes that he’s just been tricked into working for Yuko in order to pay off the cost of her services. Soon he’s employed in her little shop – a job that turns out to be nothing like his work experience!”

XXXHolic starts with an introduction to Watanuki Kimihiro, a lively young man who’s spent his life trying to deal with the ghosts and spirits that constantly harass. When he tries to outrun a particularly annoying group one day after school, he finds himself at a mysterious shop run by the beautiful, Yuuko. She offers him a fix for his problem but, in exchange, Watanuki must work for her until he can pay off the debt.

Review: Aventura (Vol. 02)

Synopsis:

Aventura, volume two, takes off where the first volume left readers: undead creatures have risen up and are attacking the main cast. With Chris already injured and Darwell useless against the skeletal creatures, Lewin steps in to save them. When all things seem lost, Lewin, a boy who had seemed to all as a magic-less individual, is able to summon a fire spirit of tremendous power. Now it’s up to the school faculty, and other higher-ups lurking in the background, to decide the fate of this surprising new pupil.
