While not nearly as epic as Anime Expo‘s licensing list, San Diego Comic Con still had a few new manga offerings for waiting fans. Under the cut is a list of announced licenses, courtesy of Gia and ANN!

ComicCon Begins and Good Signs from BLU

Lighten up, we're licensed now!

Two quick links for the night:

li2.jpg Gia‘s begun her live-blogging for the San Diego Comic Con! Notable news so far is the licensing of several new titles by DelRey, including a thirteen+ volume set of light novels illustrated by CLAMP: Soryuden. Brings back a lot of nostalgia for me, my first light novel and discovered during my first obsssive dig for all things CLAMP had anything to do with. So of course I’m also really looking forward to the upcoming CLAMP in America book (also officially announced at DelRey’s panel)!

li2.jpg BLU’s website was updated with additions to its release calendar today. New volumes listed there will put some fans’ worries to rest, including volume 11 of Love Mode and volume 4 of Black Knight. Love Mode was originally feared to be cancelled a mere one volume from it’s completion after it was postponed shortly after Tokyopop’s restructing annoucement.

With lots of news yet to come at this year’s ComicCon, keep an eye out at Gia and Deb‘s blogs for all the info!

Anime Review: XXXHolic (DVDs 1-3)

While my time watching anime is a mere fraction of my time reading manga, I realized I still have things to say about it! Go figure? So expect some sporadic updates like these as I share some thoughts on some recent viewings. Let’s get started with random-sporadic anime update number one shall we?

XXXHolic DVD 01

With releases that couldn’t get here fast enough for me, I’ve recently been enjoying the first three discs of XXXHolic, as released by Funimation.

Based on the manga by CLAMP, XXXHolic is a story about a boy named Watanuki who can see spirits. After trying to escape an especially persistent batch, he winds up in a mysterious shop run by the beautiful but equally mysterious, Yuko. She makes a deal with Watanuki: she will help him with his problem of seeing spirits and he in turn will work for her to pay off the debt.

Manga Publishers and Me (Part 04)

logo_college.jpg

Time for part four, the last chunk of my look at English manga publishers. Aren’t you glad it’s the last time you’ll have to see my lazy reuse of the same header image? Today it’s my take on DramaQueen, Aurora Publishing, Go!Comi, Kitty Media and Del Rey.

Review: Miyuki-chan in Wonderland

Manga-ka: CLAMP
Publisher: Tokyopop
Rating: Older Teen (16+)
Released: October 2003

Synopsis: “There are many worlds in the universe outside of our own, connected by doors that are hidden to the eye. But if you chance upon these doors, you can be transported to a place where supple beauties reign supreme and all of your fantasies come alive. Should you pass through the doorways, be most careful, for the creatures you will meet can be as dangerous as they are beautiful. Many would die for a glimpse at those worlds – Miyuki would do anything to have them go away.”

Don’t let the dramatics of this book’s synopsis have you fooled: Miyuki-chan in Wonderland is an often over the top, quick paced comedy with lots of sexy ladies and fantastical situations. Loosely based on the classic tale of Alice and Wonderland, Miyuki is a schoolgirl who suddenly finds herself transported to a magical world where only one thing is certain – everyone wants to get under her skirt!

Everything gets upped a notch in volume seventeen of Tsubasa. Fai is on his deathbed, with no options left to save him – short of asking for Yuko’s help. Reluctantly Kurogane makes a deal with the Witch, a deal that, through a few different passes of payment from character to character, leads to Sakura (unlike what the book’s summary would lead you to believe) embarking on a dangerous mission all on her own.

Review: Angelic Layer (Complete Series)

Manga-ka: CLAMP
Publisher: Tokyopop
Rating: Teen (13+)
Released: April 2002 – October 2003
Volumes: 5

Synopsis: “Upon arriving in the city 12-year-old Misaki spots a competition being broadcast called Angelic Layer – the latest high tech battle game fought by using dolls (Angels). Enchanted with one of the Angels she sees fighting, Misaki is inspired to create her own Angel and it leads her on an adventure that she never in her wildest dreams would have thought possible!”

Angelic Layer is CLAMP’s take at the shonen genre, putting aside the serious dramatics and cute magical pretty girls for a more light-hearted action series. The tale begins with Misaki, a young girl new to Tokyo who discovers the popular game of Angelic Layer. Players buy a fully customizable ‘Angel’, a doll that can be controlled by a player’s thoughts (through use of the proper terminal equipment) and use them in competition. The players battle their Angels against each other, putting their skill, will and power to the test. Entranced by the battles, Misaki purchases her very own Angel and her rise to fame begins!
