ANN and The Great Canadian Evangelion Ticket Giveaway Again

Anime News Network is holding a contest to give away theatre-showing tickets to the upcoming Neon Genesis Evangelion 2.0! The site had a similar contest for the first movie last year. This time they’re giving away not one, not two but 240 tickets – that’s five for each of the theatre showings across the country. It’s a simple enter-your-info-to-be-qualified contest and with that many tickets to give away, chances are good!

The showing is a single-night event on January 20th. Along with the contest, ANN’s site also has the complete list of theatres confirmed as playing the movie.

Evangelion 2.0 To Play In Canadian Theatres January 20th

Last week listings for Evangelion 2.0 popped up on Cineplex (src: ANN), one of Canada’s theatre chains. Eager to see how many anime fans across the country would get another shot at seeing Evangelion on the big-screen, I made some inquiries and did some internet spelunking and loe and behold, it looks like a decent-sized release!

The movie will be screened on the big-screen across Canada on Thursday, January 20th at 7pm (local time). Seating is limited and as tickets for the majority of the showings below are currently on sale, it’s recommended you nab your tickets while they’re available.

“The story of a 14-year-old boy, who has been entrusted with the heavy burden of mankind’s fate, is about to enter uncharted territory. Asuka, the heroine whose popularity is on par with that of Rei Ayanami, enters the fray piloting Evangelion Unit Two. Joining them is a new, alluring heroine. The war between the mysterious entities known as “Angels” and the Eva Series heats up even more with the introduction of new Evangelion units. Intense battles the likes of which have never been seen rage across the screen one after another. The excitement of these mind-blowing spectacles will take the story in a new direction.” – Cineplex.com

The first Evangelion film in this new incarnation, Evangelion 1.0: You Are Not Alone, previously played across Canada on September 30th and October 3rd, 2009.

As someone who attended the first movie and not only thought it was fantastic (and completely worth seeing on the big screen) but also had lots of fun with the community-driven spirit of the event, I will definitely be in attendance at my city’s showing (Halifax, NS!). We live in an age of the internet but nothing beats the feeling of your local community coming together to enjoy something together, plus it supports anime in your local theatres. Can’t wait!

Artist Eric Kim To Hold Manga Workshop Program in Toronto

Far too few and far between when I get to post to about some neat manga-related events going on across the country. Today I was sent an interesting press release from artist Eric Kim, probably known best to manga readers as the artist of the manga-inspired Love As A Foreign Language.

From November 6 to December 18, Eric Kim will be holding hands-on sessions about the creation of Japanese manga with the focus on storytelling through art. These sessions will take place in Toronto and will be 3 hours a class for seven weeks. Enrollment is limited to 15 students.

“Students will be introduced to layout, composition and design for storytelling, staging, anatomy, life drawing, perspective, shadow and texture, inking, toning, lettering, character design, color work, and also an overview of the North American marketplace. Along with comprehensive training both in-class and through assignments, students will obstain training that will start them on their storytelling careers.”

This Manga Dojo is a part of the Toronto Cartoonist Workshop which holds similar classes for all types of comic-making material.

Eric Kim’s Manga Dojo kicks off Saturday, November 6, 2010

TORONTO, ONTARIO – Oct 15, 2010 – Toronto’s own Eric Kim will be bringing his many skills and accomplishments to the table when he takes on the role as instructor in the Toronto Cartoonists Workshop’s Manga Dojo.

The Manga Dojo is a hands-on, practical course – ideal for both beginner and intermediate artists. Students will be guided through the process of story creation and obtain a firm grasp of the fundamental elements involved in the Art of Japanese Manga.

Dates: November 6, 2010 to December 18, 2010
Time: Saturday afternoons 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm
Length: 7 weeks of 3 hour classes
Cost: $350. plus H.S.T.
Location: 486A College Street, Toronto

ABOUT ERIC KIM: Eric Kim has been working in comics and illustration for the past seven years. His book credits include Love as a Foreign Language, Degrassi: The Next Generation Vol. 3, Battle Academy, The Sidesteppers, Streta, and most recently, the Complete Plays of William Shakespeare. As an illustrator, he has worked for numerous book and editorial clients across North America as well as Japan.

ABOUT THE TORONTO CARTOONISTS WORKSHOP: The Toronto Cartoonists Workshop is a learning environment where aspiring cartoonists can study with working professionals in the North American comic book, webcomics, animation and illustration fields.

Workshops are seven weekly sessions of three hours each and attendance is limited to a maximum of 15 students to optimize individual learning.

The TCW does not offer a certificate or degree. It is a continuing education experience where students are encouraged to sample various instructors and pick the learning styles and philosophies that work best for them.

Kuriousity.ca, Site Tweakage and Onwards to NYAF!

Now available as kuriousity.ca!

Hey everyone – a few quick notes today about some little tweaks and changes that I’ve made around Kuriousity lately. Most exciting news though first-off is that you can now reach our website with the URL – kuriousity.ca! Only took three years to get this address but finally something true to our Canadian -side and easier to remember!

In content-news, I’ve been working to clean up some of the static pages and my first stop was the dust-gathering Oh!Canada section. Clicking the Canadian flag in the header bar now leads a page that is both a link-hub to the relevant sections but also to those posts under the Canada category. Within Oh!Canada I’ve also revamped the Canadian Comic Shops page so that all provinces are on a single, easily-navigated page. Always looking for short reviews of stores around the country so send me an e-mail if you’d like to submit one.

Across the site, all posts now include an Author tag. All posts in the past have been posted by yours truly but now you can expect some news and editorial posts to go along with the reviews already provided by the rest of the fabulous Kuriousity crew! Some recent posts have been Andre’s sleuthing about DelRey that ended up preluding their transfer over to Kodansha, while Shannon has been sharing thirteen manga series she recommends for Halloween reading this October.

Expect some more changes, additions and hopefully helpful little tweaks across the site in the next couple of weeks.

As for this week however, I’ll be down in New York for New York Anime Fest to meet a ton of awesome folks, sit in on some panels, spelunk the vendors room and be a generally eager tourist in America’s Big Apple. Heading to NYAF this weekend as well? Let me know! I’m exciting to meet people. Expect updates on the site throughout the weekend, as well as quick updates to my Twitter account with any news or fun tidbits as they happen.

Happy Canada Day from the Kuriousity-folk! Hope all fellow Canadians are enjoying another yearly ritual of wearing our pride under a sea of brightly coloured fireworks, among other festivities your own local area is throwing to celebrate our country’s 143rd birthday. I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else – I adore my country… even if they did just raise taxes on Canada Day – but even so!

In Canadian anime/manga news today – Fan Expo has opened it’s registration for the August convention and Animinitime, a single-day convention coming up mid-July, closes it’s pre-registration today along with some prize giveaway draws.

Looking for some fun Canadian content for this special day? Be sure you have a copy of Svetlana Chmakova’s DramaCon on your shelf, Faith Erin Hick’s upcoming Brain Camp on order and Bryan Lee O’Malley’s upcoming final volume of Scott Pilgrim etched firmly in the ‘does-want-now’ part of your brain – to name a very short few.

Now if you’ll excuse me, there’re some good books to read, friends to see and fireworks to ogle at like a 5 year old and love it. Happy Canada Day!

Anime North 2010: Day Two

After a good night’s sleep, day two of Anime North officially began. The registration lines began to form fairly early but paled in comparison to the line for the dealer’s room which stretched on hundreds of people down the sunny parking lot. A pleasant change from yesterday, a portion of the parking/line-up area had now been sectioned off from traffic meaning that cars were no longer able to drive inbetween groups of con-goers. Yay for minimizing the risk of getting run over!

And so – day two! (watch out, it’s a long one)

Anime North 2010: Day One

Day one of Anime North has been survived! Mostly anyway. I will admit to unfortunately being careless to my two hours of sleep, limited food sources and sorching-in-the-sun heat that rendered me incompasetated by the evening. But a long nap followed by a hopefully full night’s sleep (pending the airplanes taking a halt on the constant very-close-over-head flying) and all shall be right as rain and ready for day two!

But how was day one you ask?

Good morning blogsphere – it’s 6:29am and I’m no doubt one of many currently waiting to board a plane and head over to Toronto for Anime North 2010!

Fellow Kuriousity reviewer Marsha is joining me on what is her second time at the yearly event and my first – being a Canadian anime fan for over fourteen years, it seems about time that I give AN a go.

ANNCast – Retro Anime, Canadian Cons and Me on Manga-Doom

So doom may be a little grim a word but it’s a rampant sort of tone recently with all that’s going on in the English manga-industry. I popped in on this week’s ANNCast to share some of my thoughts on recent events, in particular DC’s announcement regarding CMX and the disappearance of Go!Comi.

I’m starting to feel like all my efforts to promote CMX are being intentionally smited somehow though – first CMX’s shutdown is announced mere days after we here at Kuriousity make the decision to push out a bunch of CMX reviews (since the site’s been sadly lacking them!) and then here in the ANNCast I tell everyone to go check out CMX’s site and look through the books they have – only to have DC Comics, for some inexplicable reason, strip down CMX’s website today. Yikes. And triple-boo on you, DC Comics. What the heck is going through your corporate mind over there?

Also on the ANNCast this week is a guest sharing her thoughts on the difference between Canadian and American anime conventions. Interesting ideas there. As someone who’s been staff helping run a convention and holding panels more than an attendee of any, I don’t have all that much to go on pertaining to the concept. Comparatively I’ve been to San Diego Comic Con and Fan Expo, which are ‘very’ similar in their target-audience but different in obvious ways because, well, SDCC is in California and Fan Expo is not. I am heading to Anime North next week and New York Anime Fest in October however, so for pondering’s sake, I’ll keep the concept of difference in mind. The discussion about the semi-thankless nature of running an anime convention is interesting too. Super-duper hard work but worth it for all the thank yous and happy fans? Yup!

So check out the podcast if you so feel inclined – it always makes for interesting listening! And beware my voice, which you may be doomed to hear in your mind each time you read one of my reviews from now on ;)
