Review: Man’s Best Friend

From the artist of Wild Rock comes Man’s Best Friend! Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?”

Man’s Best Friend is as the title would suggest, a story about a dog. Of course, this is a yaoi so thank goodness it’s not just any dog! The title tale in this book follows Ukyo, who one day comes across a loveable stray dog he names Kuro. Taking in the little pile of scruff, he’s in for a shock when the dog suddenly takes human form, all out of love for the kind man who took him in.

Review: Innocent Bird (Vol. 03)

Synopsis: “Koumori leads Karasu and Shirasagi through the wastes of Puragatory, while high above, the Seraphim argue over how best to prevent the Distortion from spreading any further. When the war between Heaven and Hell begins once again, Dominions and Karasu restart their own fight, but soon the Archduke gets involved… and what happens in the end will take everyone by surprise! Faith, passion, and betrayal collide as the universe spirals downward towards chaos…”

Continuing the events of volume two, the Distortion threatening Heaven, Hell and all those in-between continues to grow as the battle between angels and demons begins again. It’s a character cast call as nearly all previously seen characters return for their final stands, sometimes with some explanatory back-story tossed in for good measure.

Review: Voice or Noise (Vol. 01)

Synopsis: “When Shinichiro’s beloved dog, Flappy, starts acting up and disobeying commands, his trusted bet gives him a strange and unexpected referral; he sends Shinichiro to his long-time friend, Narusawa, a college professor who can apparently communicate with animals. At first Narusaea denies that he has this special skill, but a snarky, talking black cat gives away Narusawa’s secret and reveals that Shinichiro may have this special gift himself…”

After a trip to the vet warrants no help for Shinchiro’s dog and his sudden strange behavior, a referral leads the concerned owner to Narusawa, a cold and unconcerned college professor. Shinchiro learns that Narusawa, despite his standoffish attitude, has the amazing ability to speak to animals. Shinchiro wishes to have this power as well and learns that it may actually already possess the talent. He wants Narusawa to teach him to understand animals but doesn’t realize that it may not be that simple.

Review: Truly Kindly

Truly Kindly is a compilation of short stories by Fumi Yoshinaga, a follow up to her previous compilation, Lovers in the Night, and includes a return of its title characters. Ranging from surprise endings to the short and sweet, it’s a diverse collection of character driven stories for which its manga-ka is known.

Review: Takumi-kun (Vol. 01): June Pride

Synopsis: “Takumi, a boy from humble origins, prepares to begin his second year at the school. But how will the two cope when Gui confesses his love to Takumi?”

The Takumi-kun series was originally a series of boys’ love novels by Shinobu Gotoh, adapted years later into a six-part manga series by Kazumi Ohya. With each manga volume of this series individually titled, June Pride, is the given title of volume one and here readers are first introduced to Takumi Hayama, the focus of the story. Taking place in an all boys’ school, readers follow Takumi and his peers through their years at the secluded and prestigious Shidou Academy.

Review: Gakuen Heaven

Review: Lovers In the Night

Synopsis: “Hired as a servant by an aristocrat family, Claude works hard to care for the family that took him in. But when the master of the house and his wife eventually pass away, Claude must keep spoiled son Antoine in line and teach him to be a proper gentleman. As the two become closer, a forbidden love develops between them…”

Lovers in the Night is a one shot graphic novel following the relationship of its two main characters; Claude, the monotone hired servant and Antoine, a young spoiled Aristocrat. Though the story begins with Claude as a servant to Antoine’s father, this first chapter merely acts as a stepping-stone to the main story following the forbidden love between Claude and his late Master’s son.
