ANN Review: Dengeki Daisy (Vol. 01)

New review over at AnimeNewsNetwork for yet another new Viz Media shoujo (is it just me or are there more than usual coming out lately?), Dengeki Daisy. Long story short – buy this book, shoujo-fans!

I’ll admit I  didn’t think much of the book on first impressions – meaning I read the synopsis and went ‘eh’. But I purchased it anyway (via Strange Adventures) because I love trying new things and I adored it. It starts off feeling a little stereotypical but really surprised me with how much I came to love the two leads in such a short period time, especially ‘Daisy’. Volume two can’t come soon enough!

ANN Review: Maoh Juvenile Remix (Vol. 01)

New review posted at AnimeNewsNetwork over this past convention-busy weekend for the first volume of Maoh: Juvenile Remix. You can read this series online over at ShonenSunday.com

I’m really interested to read the second volume of Maoh because I’m pretty stumped on where I think the plot is going to go. The apparent antagonist is interesting too. He reminded me a lot of Griffith from Berserk, as I mentioned in my review. I’ll admit I did chuckle a bit at how dramatically the story emphasized the lead’s ability to make others say his own thoughts out loud though. Yes it’s a pretty crazy power to have but compared to so many other shonen-leads before him, it seemed a little initially silly. Could mean lots for future events though, I’m eager to see how he continues to use them.

ANN Review: Chi’s Sweet Home (Vol. 01)

ANN Review: Chi's Sweet Home (Vol. 01)

New review posted over at AnimeNewsNetwork – the first volume of Vertical’s new series, Chi’s Sweet Home (Vol. 01).

I already noted in my short Swag Bag post how I’m not a big cat fan and it’s no surprise that’s nothing really changed after reading this book. It was cute, it was colourful, it is a pretty charming book – but it’s not really for me. I just don’t find the cat cute – a little dumb and silly but not over the top adorable as some had insisted I would. Sorry Chi, you tried! Vertical did a great job on the book visually though and I love the paper it’s printed on. The baby talk of the kitten though? Ehhhh… a swing and a miss.

Still, you like cats and comics then you should definitely check out Chi’s Sweet Home.

ANN Review: Flower In A Storm (Vol. 01)

ANN Review: Flower in a Storm (Vol. 01)

A new review of mine’s been posted over on AnimeNewsNetwork – this time for one of Viz Media’s new shoujo series, Flower In A Storm.

Overall I was really underwhelmed by this manga, falls on the dull side of things. It definitely lacks the hook-factor that many other shoujos have, though I suppose it helps to have one less addictive series growing on my shelf, right? It’s too bad though, a girl with superheroes versus a crazy guy with a gun sounded like it had a lot of promise. Upside though, the flower/gun design on the back of the book is beautiful – very nice work there.

ANN Review: Afterschool Charisma (Vol. 01)

ANN Review: Afterschool Charisma (Vol. 01)

I’ve got a review for the first volume of Afterschool Charisma (Vol. 01) up over at AnimeNewsNetwork so check it out if you’re interested in what I thought of this high school of clones.

Overall, I really enjoyed it. It’s sad knowing the next volume won’t be released until January 2011 but at least if I’m suddenly overcome with the need to read, chapters are still posted on a regular basis over at Viz Media’s Sig IKKI website. I still much more prefer my manga in print but the ability to jump into future chapters with their free-to-read website is pretty snazzy – plus makes previewing titles before I buy them a great bonus. On the note of print, I love the design work on this book, looks really great!

ANN Review: Stepping on Roses (Vol. 02)

ANN Review: Stepping on Roses (Vol. 02)

This weekend my review for Stepping on Roses (Vol. 02) was posted over on ANN – a shallow, slightly offensive series that has really pretty art and enough silly entertaining moments to make me keep reading it. It definitely joins the ranks of Viz Media’s other guilty-pleasure-for-those-who-enjoy-them sort of books, such as Black Bird, Hot Gimmick and Flower in a Storm.

Must say I’m starting to really like the super summed up pros and cons at the end of ANN reviews; the grades aren’t my proverbial cup of tea but the short blurbs really give review skimmers some reasoning past a couple letters. Has been a great experience thus far!

ANN Review: Otomen (Vol. 06)

ANN Review: Otomen (Vol. 06)

Continuing with some more Viz Media shoujo-goodness, I reviewed Otomen (Vol. 06) for AnimeNewsNetwork over the weekend.

Otomen continues to be a really fun series. It is getting a little repetitive though and the number of Otomen (men who indulge in stereotypically girlish hobbies) is getting to be a little larger than one would expect in a series that’s still trying to thrive off it being quirky. At least all said-Otomen are really entertaining characters. While there was still lots to laugh at (in the good way) in this sixth volume, it was a little disappointing not having the lead female, Ryo, make much of an appearance. Her tomboyish personality, and dense overall sense of awareness, always makes her an enjoyable addition to the story, especially when it triggers all of Asuka’s adorable romantic ‘advances’. Hopefully all that extra good stuff will return in volume seven!

ANN Review: Library Wars – Love and War (Vol. 01)

New review written by yours truly over at AnimeNewsNetwork, this time for one of Viz Media’s new series –  Library Wars – Love and War (Vol. 01).

I didn’t have many expectations going into this one, short that a lot of fellow bloggers were really eager for its release. Had to admit though, the idea of librarians being hardcore gun-toting organized vigilantes-of-sorts charged with protecting books from censorship agents did sound pretty neat. While the characters aren’t exactly hardcore, the story still really drew me in – very likeable characters and smooth pacing. Most of this first volume follows the lead going through physical training to be an agent and I’m really forward to seeing their skills in action in later volumes.

ANN Review: Kobato (Vol. 01 – 02)

ANN Review: Kobato

My review of the first two volumes of CLAMP’s Kobato. series has been posted over at AnimeNewsNetwork. Good grades all around for a very fun series so far.

I’m a big CLAMP fan and was eager to read Kobato.. I’d read some chapters in NewType when it ran but didn’t get too much of an idea about it, short that the art style was really pleasantly nostalgic. The tone and art of the series in general reminds me a lot of Cardcaptor Sakura, my favourite of CLAMP’s work. I really recommend reading both the first two volumes of Kobato. together (Yen Press chose to release the two volumes at once) because it really sets the story much more than the first which is more  short story in style.

A thanks again to my local comic store Strange Adventures for always stocking the best and newest books on shelf for me to purchase each Wednesday!

ANN Review: My Girlfriend’s A Geek (Vol. 01)

ANN Review: My Girlfriend's a Geek (Vol. 01)

Yesterday my review of Yen Press’s My Girlfriend’s a Geek (Vol. 01) was posted over at AnimeNewsNetwork. I’m glad to see readers curious about checking out the series in the comments and some already-fans.

This was a series I’d been really eager to read since Yen Press announced it. A series about a guy dealing with his girlfriend’s obsession with yaoi sounded like it could be ripe with great humour potential if handled correctly. Well the series definitely isn’t disappointing – I adored the first volume. I laughed out loud a couple times and found the romantic element of the series really endearing, at least from the angle of the male lead. There isn’t much in the way of romance coming from the girl unless you count her endless fantasies about boys loving other boys.

A shout-out thanks to my local comic store Strange Adventures for again providing me with all the best goodies to purchase each Wednesday :)

Take me back to the top!
