News Worth Repeating

ANN reported back on Friday (via animeanime.jp) that Fumi Yoshinaga’s character driven manga, Antique Bakery, is getting made into a 12 episode anime series. It’s currently planned to hit late night television in Japan in July.

I know I for one am psyched by the news. I’m a huge Yoshinaga fan and look forward to seeing how her work is translated over to the world of moving pictures. With so much of her stories’ power protrayed in subtle facial expressions and an excellant sense of pacing, can an anime keep the same charm? I’m certainly looking forward to finding out.

First Look at Batman: Gotham Knight

Something which I’m sure will interest some of my site visitors, the sneak peek for the upcoming Batman: Gotham Knight DVD release has popped up on YouTube. Produced by Bruce Timm (automatic point on the awesome scale), the straight to DVD movie is the combination of segments animated by several anime studios. It’s shaping up to look pretty snazzy so far with some real talent behind it and some classy reimaginings. I definately recommend fans of the dark knight check it out.

Watch the sneak peek here.

Big Screen DBZ Continues

A link via ComingSoon.net leads fans to a movie blog where they can get some more peeks into the filming of the live action adaptation of Akira Toriyama’s globally popular, Dragonball Z (debatably Dragonball judging from released plot synopsises). Is that a glimpse of the classic orange gi I see in the background? Lots of pictures of the movie’s cast, including some video interviews.

You can check ’em out for yourself over at hoyCinema’s Movieland blog.

Blade of the Immortal Animated

As long time fan of the series, I have to post that Blade of the Immortal (currently being released in NorthAmerica by DarkHorse) is being adapted into an anime. I’ve heard similiar rumours here and there for years so hopefully this one’s the real deal.

Dragonball Cast Breakdown

News is out, though yet to officially confirmed, that James Wong will be directing the 20th Century Fox adaptation of Dragonball Z. Included with this is also a cast breakdown, which if true, shows that the adaptation is infact Dragonball, the original series (with a much more managable cast size) instead of DBZ.

The basic plot keeps fairly true with the original series, greatest noticable differance being Goku, who begins the series as a socially unaccepted 18 year old school student. This brings to question what era or culture this movie will take place in, for none is given as of yet. Other main characters include Bulma, Yamcha, Lord Piccolo, Gohan and Master Roshi.

Full details including character breakdowns can be read here.

A Spirited Flop

Despite the excitement surrounding the Canadian premiere of Ghibli Studio’s Spirited Away, fans around the country are being disappointed by major editing, including over thirty minutes of cut footage. As much as fans love the support for Ghibli movies by Disney and our Canadian broadcast channels, not to mention spreading it to thousands of television sets, is this manglement worth our time? CBC will get a lot of unhappy e-mails over this one, especially with an agreement between Disney and Ghibli studios forbidding such broadcasting edits.

Death Note removed?

Looks like YTV has done some rethinking about playing Death Note. The premiere episode has been taken down from their schedule with no word as to why. Fans hope that it’s merely being pushed back, perhaps due to waiting for more episodes to be dubbed, and not cancelled due to a relooking at the content, much darker than YTV’s usual showings. Replacing Death Note’s first showtime is Inu-Yasha. YTV’s new Bionix schedule can be read here.

Canadian Premieres

The North American premiere of the Death Note anime will be on Canada’s YTV. Playing during the later half of YTV’s Bionix showing, Death Note, episode one, will play on Friday September 7th, 11pm Atlantic-time, 10pm Central.

The first episode of the popular OEL animation Avatar, season 3, will play on YTV, Friday September 21st, 6pm Atlantic-time, 5pm Central.

For more of YTV’s lineups, see their schedule here.

Heavenly Sword and Ghosts?

Fourth installment of the ‘Heavenly Sword’ anime-inspired movies has been posted. Watch it here.

Also apparently there’s rumours going around about a possible second season of Ghost Hunt. Let’s hope so, really well done series. The Ghost Hunt manga is currently being released in English by DelRey.

Junjo Romantica anime?

A possible leak may have revealed that the popular manga series, Junjo Romantica, a yaoi by Shungiku Nakamura, is being made into an anime. While the page which gave this information was quickly removed a day later, it still leaves fans wondering and hoping for the best after such a slew of successful manga-to-anime series in the yaoi genre so far this year.
