New sale over at RightStuf.com! It’s so tough when they have manga sales back-to-back to one another – the Viz Media sale likely put a good dent in many manga buyers’ wallets. Hopefully we still have some bookshelf space left as they offer up to 30% from Vertical Inc series for the rest of the week!
Lots of great titles there to suggest. My personal recommendation is definitely Osamu Tezuka’s Black Jack – a brilliantly executed episodic manga about an unlicensed surgeon performing medical miracles around the world in a variety of situations ranging from the reality-grounded feats of skill to the unbelievably-out-there (tumour child anyone?). If you’re looking for something on the darker side, I recommend another Osamu Tezuka title: MW – it’s creepy and fantastic, plus a one-shot.
For the more light-hearted reads, I recommend one of their newest (and already bestselling) series – Chi’s Sweet Home. If you like cats, this one’s for you. If you don’t like cats, it still manages to be pretty cute. There’s also Twin Spica which is a surprisingly gripping but still inherently optimistic story about a girl who wants to be an astronaut.
Sales like this are also a great time to pre-order some upcoming titles such as Osamu Tezuka’s Ayako which with this sale goes from $29.95 to $18.06.

To Terra is a messedup classic manga [which though by a major shojo artist, was a shonen manga] about a dystopian future where humanity is controlled by computers, Earth is dying, and psychic mutants rebel against their oppressors. It's epic space opera stuff, and the other Keiko Takemiya series Vertical published, Andromeda Stories, makes a nice sister series with it's similar doomed setting.
Dororo is also quite fun, a classic Tezuka manga that's somewhat macabre as a child thief named Dororo meets up with a paraplegic Samurai who is hunting down the demons his father sold his limbs and organs to as a baby in hops of reclaiming them. The subsequent revelations of his past, and Dororo's true origins, make a fascinating, offbeat read.
Ooh, I'm so happy I waited till the last day to take advantage of Viz's sale, since the overlap allowed me to throw in some Vertical books too! Definitely checking out Twin Spica after loving the first volume I picked up at the library. I enjoy Chi's Sweet Home too, but I didn't order it—I try to leave myself some titles to buy in-store to satisfy my instant gratification needs, as well as support local business. Twin Spica is a little harder to find at my bookstore, but Chi seems to have no problem making a spot for herself on the shelves :D
I just bought Chi's Sweet Home for my sister (she just turned 11 Tuersday) as a birthday present and she absolutely loved it I have yet to read it but seems like a good title. I would have to mention Ode to Kirihito it's an amazingly adept look at man and the battle inside himself to ward of the brutal atavism that lies lurking inside him and to find meaning in life.
